How to Write IELTS Writing Task 2

How to write IELTS writing task 2? Well, we all know that the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) examination has four modules.

They are listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Again, the writing module has two sections IELTS writing task 1 and writing task 2.

Here, I will explain how to write IELTS writing task 2.

Know the Type of Your Question and Plan the Outline Accordingly

When you have an IELTS writing task 2 question in your hand, try to understand which type of question it is. Understanding the type of question is essential because that will affect how you design your essay.

Generally, there are three types of IELTS writing task 2 essays. They are as follows:

Opinion Essay

These essays appear in the examination most frequently. Even though the term ‘opinion essay’ might be new for some people, it is very much like an argumentative essay.

A classic example of this type of question is: ‘Some people think that success is the best measure for intelligence, while others think intelligence can be measured in other ways.

Discuss both views and give your opinion. ’Do not worry; you can design these essays.

At first, in the introduction, restate the question in your own words, state your thought, and two reasons to support your thought.

Then in the body paragraphs, explain your views with an example. In the third paragraph, you can state a counterargument.

Finally, draw a conclusion summarizing the whole essay.

Problem Essay

These essays are commonly known as problem-solution essays. You are expected here to point the causes and solutions of a problem in these essays.

For instance, the topic might be ‘Overpopulation in many urban centers around the world is a significant problem.

What are the causes of this? How can this problem be solved?’

For this kind of essay, you will begin similarly by restating the questions. However, you will mention a fundamental cause and a solution in the introduction.

Next, in the first body paragraph, you will have to explain the cause with an example.

And in the second body paragraph, you will have to explain the solution with an example.

Lastly, in conclusion, compile the essential points and state your view/opinion.

Double Question Essay

In these essays, two questions are given after a statement. Therefore, you will have to answer both the questions relating to the statement.

Usually, these questions are like this: ‘Success is often measured by wealth and material possession.

Do you think wealth is the best measure of success?

What makes a successful person?’

So just like other essays, restate the question in the introduction and answer both the question.

Then, explain your answers with an example (two separate body paragraphs). Finally, construct a conclusion by abridging the answers to the questions.

Timing is The Key to Success

As you will have an hour for the entire writing exam, try to keep forty to forty-five minutes in hand for writing task 2.

That is because it is lengthy and requires a lot of brainstorming. Besides, among the two tasks writing task 2 weighs more.

Hence, when you are preparing for the IELTS exam, time yourself. That is how you will be aware of your writing speed.

Task Achievement Gives You or Takes Your Base Marks

Remember, you will have to meet the word limits and answer the question correctly. You might be wondering how you can be sure whether you have written enough words or not.

Do not worry; there is a simple trick! If you are taking the paper-based test, practice your work in the official exam answer sheets.

Then, count how many pages you generally need to meet the word limits. That is how you will assume how much you need to write to meet the word limits.

If you are taking the online test, type in notepad, and later check using word how much you have written.

Another essential point you will have to explain all the points mentioned in the answer.

At the same time, you need to remain careful that something that is not asked in the question should not remain in the answer.

Coherence and Cohesion

Construct your paragraphs symmetrically. Like the order of the body paragraphs need to be meaningful.

Besides, the transition from one paragraph to another paragraph needs to be smooth. The correct use of connecting words achieves this smooth transition of paragraphs.

To Summarize

If you follow the pattern according to your question type and apply the other mentioned techniques, you will ace your IELTS writing task 2. Hence, I hope now you know how to write IELTS writing task 2.
